Surfrider Leadership Academy

design strategy

The Problem: The Surfrider Foundation sought to increase collaboration and combat brain drain on the rural coast of Washington. My client wondered if a leadership development program would be an appropriate way to bring together disparate communities around shared conservation goals.

The Design: Working alongside the rural Washington community, I co-designed the original pilot, including key elements such as the participant profile, curriculum make-up and advisory board role. I have facilitated the Surfrider Leadership Academy annually since it started in 2014. We’ve now graduated 22 alumni from the program and are working on expanding it to other chapters in the Surfrider Foundation network. Alumni have routinely moved into leadership roles as a result of the program and the net promoter score hovers near a perfect 10 when participants are asked whether they would recommend it to a friend or colleague.

Sample Work: You can get a sense for the contents of the Surfrider Leadership Academy Guidebook that I designed below. It was created to orient those interested in the inner workings of the program to how to run and adapt it effectively.
